Have I left anything out??
Yesterday a young man came into the office for a MiraDry treatment. On his way to the appointment he stopped at the mall for all new colorful shirts! He went on to explain that he could never wear anything but black, because of the excessive amount of sweating he normally does. He can’t wait to wear yellow….red…blue….green.
You’re probably familiar with PRP thanks to the widely-covered vampire facial, but it’s actually a very commonly applied procedure outside the Kardashian world. From knee and back pain to mini breast lifts, PRP (which is essentially an injection of your own blood) can be a godsend.
And now it’s becoming more popular as a treatment for hair loss. Rather than hair transplant surgery, which isn’t right for everyone, this procedure processes your blood to increase the concentration of platelets, then an injection at the site of hair loss encourages growth. So how long does it take? Does it hurt? How much does it cost? For the essential questions, we turned to CB-dermatologist Dr. Mitchell A. Kline, who was kind enough to answer all our questions.
How exactly does PRP for hair regeneration work?
Essentially, here’s how PRP for hair regeneration works: plasma from the patient’s blood, spun down to remove red blood cells, results in a concentration of platelets. Platelets absorb growth factors in the body and when injected after being spun in a centrifuge, the concentrated platelets result in a concentration of growth factors that promotes hair growth. Excellent topical preparations help a great deal as does the use of oral Propecia and some people advocate the use of scalp lasers.
How long does it take to see results?
Results begin to show in three months and are usually quite dramatic at six months and later. Younger people in teens and 20s show results much more quickly.
How many sessions does a patient need?
Initially, about six sessions 3 to 5 weeks apart and then an occasional one or two sessions are needed every 6 to 12 months thereafter. This may change as we get more experience with the process over time.
